guest profile: alexandra d'anna

I've always been interested in the perspectives of others; what makes someone who they are-- and why they believe or are passionate about certain causes or issues.  This brings me to the launch of a bi-monthly series that hopefully paints a portrait of the people that I know in my life, and one that eventually expands to people that I meet on the street.  Alex, one of my good friends, launches this month's guest profile segment.  She exudes Grace Kelly in this vintage and retro look.

1. What is your name, age, and where is your hometown?

Alexandra D’Anna, 24 y/o, born in Baltimore, Maryland but now living in Washington, D.C.

2.  What are some of your interests that you are most passionate about?

So, I always find questions like this hard because for me there are two kinds of interests. On one hand I have passions that are more “serious”, like women’s issues (the prevalence of sexual assault prevalence, wage gap, etc.) or the flaws in the criminal justice system (all of the factors leading to wrongful convictions, like police/government misconduct and eyewitness misidentifications). It’s because of these interests that I’m in law school working towards becoming a public defender.

On the other hand I have the passions that make dealing with all the above bearable – passions that are more about me and less about my vision for a better world – like fashion, interior design, and travel. If I didn’t have fashion as an outlet I might have combusted by now.

If you couldn’t tell by now, I am a true Gemini.

3. Whose style do you identify with the most? Further, if you could trade closets with anyone, who would it be and why?

I would say I identify most with Bella Hadid’s style. She does it all; from more feminine, colorful looks to edgier and darker styles. I’m the same way in that sense. I don’t confine myself to one style niche and I’m incapable of sitting comfortably in one side of any binary.

If I could trade closets with anyone it would have to be Rihanna – even if just for the Swarovski dress. She has an amazing spread of pieces from denim to slip dresses to gowns. She’s another woman I admire for her ability to transition between styles and is never stuck in a niche, yet somehow makes every look her own.

4. Whether it be an outfit, a song, an activity, a state of mind etc.—what makes you feel empowered?

Ruby Woo lipstick by MAC and Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac.

5. What are your longstanding goals? If money were not an issue, what would you hope to accomplish for yourself and/or the community-at-large?

Well, first I hope to graduate law school in May 2018 (!!!) and then become a public defender or defense attorney. I hope to help all people accused of crimes, but I really want to keep innocent people from going to jail. Other than that, I just want to be happy and feel good about what I’m doing with my life. I hope to be a well-travelled, educated woman who works hard but stays sane.

6. If you had $100 to give towards a charitable organization or cause, where would it go towards and why?

The Muscular Dystrophy Association. My family has been involved with this organization for years and sort of made a personal connection to it through a young boy named Mattie J.T. Stepanek (you can read a little about him here: http://www.oprah.com/spirit/in-memory-of-mattie-stepanek)

Muscular Dystrophy is an umbrella term for several muscle diseases (like ALS for example). MDA does so much – from raising money for research to holding summer camp for children with these diseases and they deserve every penny. The people involved are some of the best human beings on the planet! If you want to learn more or donate, visit http://www.mda.org/.
